Costa Rica is one of the countries where UN-DESA has built capacities on the use of modelling tools to inform sustainable development policies. Pilar Garrido, Deputy-Minister of Planning and Economic Policy of Costa Rica highlighted that “investing in modelling and linking it with policy is actually one of the most important elements for implementing the SDGs. It is a long-term relationship, it is investing in our countries capabilities to build sustainable, coherent and evidence based policies. I think this effort needs to be sustained overtime.”

Senior Economic Affairs Officer Mariangela Parra-Lancourt presented a brief on the World Economic and Social Survey 2018: Frontier Technologies for Sustainable Development at the Informal Meeting of the General Assembly Plenary entitled “Impact of Rapid Technological Change on the Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals” today in New York.

Development often creates or exacerbates poverty and comes at the expense of environmental integrity, pushing people further behind.  It is particularly important, she stated, to  address the inequalities that create obstacles to the reform of the mechanisms through which people are pushed behind, such as decision-making systems where the most disadvantaged are often unrepresented.
