Economic growth in 2000 was unexpectedly and unusually high and widespread. The increase in gross world product exceeded the earlier forecast of 3.5 per cent and was the strongest in more than a decade. This outcome was the result of improvements in all major regions of the world and was associated with double-digit growth in the volume of international trade. The world economic recovery that started in 1999 reached its peak before the close of 2000 but is expected to continue until at least the end of 2001, albeit at a slightly slower pace. The outlook is for global economic growth to moderate from 4 per cent in 2000 to 3.5 per cent in 2001, with the slowdown limited in extent and… World Economic Situation and Prospects 2001
Part I. State of the World Economy Part one of the World Economic and Social Survey 2001 chronicles how the very positive developments in output and international trade, with reasonably buoyant levels of international finance for emerging markets for the first half of 2000, turned into retrenchment. The ongoing downturn in the business cycle in developed countries has been unusual in a number of respects when contrasted with previous downturns in the post-war period. Part II. A Globalizing World: Risks, Vulnerability and Opportunity Part two of World Economic and Social Survey 2001 looks at some examples of vulnerability in the context of globalization, with the discussions focusing on how… World Economic and Social Survey 2001
The targets of international development strategies have not been met in the past. A different approach is needed. Implementation should be readily monitored, progress measured and, where necessary, supplementary actions identified. A revitalized flow of development finance through both official channels and private institutions is necessary. Democratic processes of good governance and increased trade openness are also required for a peaceful and prosperous world. More effective integration of the developing countries into the global trading system remains a major challenge. Enhanced access to and improvement of education, skills, infrastructure and new technologies are increasingly needed… Download
Part I. State of the World Economy Part one of the World Economic and Social Survey 2000 chronicles a remarkable recovery in the world economy after the crisis years 1997-1999. Although the volume of international financial flows has not returned to its pre-crisis level, international financial markets are again displaying a sense of calm. International trade has also largely recovered from the setback it suffered following the financial crises. Part II. Escaping the Poverty Trap Part two of World Economic and Social Survey 2000 identifies a number of critical steps for the poorer countries to break out of their "poverty trap" and find a path to sustained and sustainable development - a… World Economic and Social Survey 2000

This paper addresses the growing concern in the international community in recent years with the widening IT gap, or information divide so called, between urban and rural areas in developing economies and between the rich and the poor economies. The paper will first look at the current situation of management and utilisation of IT in developing economies and secondly at possible strategies and measures that the United Nations could take to assist developing countries to improve the management and utilisation of IT for efficient, effective, equitable and sustainable development. At the beginning of 2000, the world economy was in better shape than the previous year, when the aftermath of the financial crises in Asia and the Russian Federation and the uncertainties relating to Brazil clouded the outlook. It is estimated that gross world product expanded by 2.6 per cent in 1999, a notable improvement over the 1.8 per cent for 1998 and 0.6 per cent higher than had been anticipated in mid-1999. The signs of strengthening and broadening of the recovery in the world economy identified in early 1999 have gained momentum. The outlook in major countries is for a slight acceleration to almost 3 per cent growth of gross world product in 2000 and a return to the pre-crisis pace… World Economic Situation and Prospects 2000
1999 World Economic and Social Survey 1999?Trends and Policies in the World Economy
Part one: State of the World Economy Part one of World Economic and Social Survey 1999 provides a chronicle of how large parts of the world economy were sent reeling in the past two years by the fragility of financial systems and their international connectedness. On the whole, the world economy seems to have hit bottom and most of the affected countries are moving towards recovery. Part two: Financial Development in the Globalizing World Part two of World Economic and Social Survey 1999 serves as a contribution to the international discussion on "financing for development". It seeks to give a… World Economic and Social Survey Archive: 1990-1999
