Vulnerability and Poverty in a Global Economy (CDP Policy Note 1999)

The generation, quality and stability of employment are key strategic dimensions of development policy. Poverty is prominent among women; combating gender inequalities therefore forms an important component of poverty eradication. Policies for growth and job creation include support for labour-intensive sectors, self-employment and small and medium-sized enterprises. Macroeconomic stability and a consistent commitment to public investment in education, health, infrastructure and research are also required. World Economic Situation and Prospects for 1999

The world economy is now growing at its slowest rate since early in the decade. The recession in Japan, the East Asian crisis and the Russian crisis ??along with contagion throughout the financial markets ??combined in 1998 to halve the growth rate of the world economy and to raise concerns about a global recession. At some points during the year there was fear of serious damage to major financial markets. Compared with the previous year, 23 fewer countries saw an increase in output per capita in 1998 and no significant improvement is expected in 1999. World Economic and Social Survey 1996

Trends and Policies in the World Economy World Economic and Social Survey 1996 sees increasing grounds for optimism in the global economy, although considerable problems remain. The Survey was issued shortly after the success of the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) and agreement on the need for a new global urban agenda. In addition to reviewing data and projections on the extent of urbanization, it examines trends in the provision of electric power in developing countries and alternative institutional arrangements for meeting the world's growing demand for water.
