Shantanu Mukherjee, Director, Economic Analysis and Policy Division, UN DESA

Mr. Shantanu Mukherjee is an economist with interests in poverty, inequality and sustainable development. His professional experience spans 30 years of service in the United Nations system, national government and academia. He served as Chief of the Integrated Policy Analysis Branch in UN DESA’s Division for Sustainable Development Goals where he managed the publication of the Global Sustainable Development Report and the implementation of the Technology Facilitation Mechanism. 

Prior to joining UN DESA, he led the research and writing team of UNDP’s Human Development Report. This was preceded by a stint as head of UNDP’s global MDG policy work, during which he helped developed its signature MDG Acceleration Framework rolled out across a range of countries. 

Mr. Mukherjee is a national of India, where he began his career in development policy and public finance. He holds a doctorate in Economics from Princeton University, as well as advanced degrees in Public Policy and in Physics.
