On 10 June, at its Management Segment, ECOSOC adopted its resolution on the report of the Committee for Development Policy (CDP) at its 27th session. Matthias Bruckner, Acting Secretary of the CDP, delivered a statement on behalf of Taffere Tesfachew, Vice-President, introducing the CDP report. The statement summarizes the Committee’s key findings and recommendations. A central message of the report is the reaffirmation of the strong commitment to multilateralism. Under ECOSOC’s annual theme, the Committee addressed the fundamental shifts redefining the global economy; the role of trade as an engine for sustainable development; financing for sustainable development, and convergence in human and social development, issues that will be reported on to ECOSOC in greater detail at the High-Level Segment.
The statement emphasized the Committee’s concern with the difficult environment that least developed countries (LDCs) are currently facing. Based on its monitoring of the eight countries that are graduating or have recently graduated from the LDC category, the Committee observed that these countries have limited capacity to address global crises, financial constraints, geo-political tensions, and climate change. The Committee initiated a review of the LDC graduation framework with a view to updating its own procedures and making the graduation process more predictable and transparent. It reiterated the importance of updating the existing General Assembly resolutions on smooth transition and has made concrete recommendations in this regard. The statement also noted that several LDCs are among the most vulnerable to the recent developments in trade, which close them off from a key channel towards structural transformation.
The resolution welcomes the work of the CDP and, inter alia, invites it to examine and make recommendations on ECOSOC’s 2026 annual theme, and addresses the monitoring of countries graduating and recently graduated from the LDC category, support for LDCs (including graduating countries), and the graduating process.
