Presentation of the 2023 CDP Report at the High-Level Segment of ECOSOC

On July 20, Professor Sakiko Fukuda-Parr, Chair of the Committee for Development Policy (CDP), presented the report on the Committee's 2023 session at the High-Level Segment of ECOSOC.

Highlighting the key messages in the report, she stressed the importance of securing a just transition to ensure that the transformation towards a low-carbon future leaves and pushes no one, and no country, behind; and called attention to the escalating external debt distress and financial constraints faced by many developing countries. She referred to the Committee's recommendation for a new generation of voluntary national reviews (VNRs) that refocuses the reports towards evidence-based analysis, addresses the core transformative elements of the 2030 Agenda, includes feedback mechanisms to inform future policy action; and ensures greater space for the contributions of civil society.

Regarding the CDP's work on the least developed countries (LDCs), Professor Fukuda-Parr reported on refinements adopted by the CDP to the composition of the LDC criteria, and on the enhanced monitoring mechanism for graduating and graduated countries, which has enabled the Committee to address the specific situations of Solomon Islands and Angola. The CDP further highlighted the need for the international community to provide targeted and innovative support to graduating and recently graduated countries, including increased financing for development to enable the expansion of productive capacities and building resilience to future pandemics.

The next plenary meeting of the CDP will take place in March 2024.
