The environmental impact of conventional agriculture The huge increase in global food production in recent decades has come at a high cost for the environment. Half of the habitable land is now used for agriculture. As a result of the rapid growth in agricultural production, one third of the global forest cover has been lost in the last century and 20 per cent of the standing forest has been degraded between 1990 and 2015. Figure 1 shows the annual net change in forest area in different regions between 1990 and 2020. The figure shows that the annual rate of decline in forest area has been particularly pronounced in South America and Africa in this period. Introduction Four out of every five people in poverty live in rural areas. The gaps between rural and urban poverty still exist and many rural areas continue to face risks of social, economic and political marginalization. Thus, there is a concern that the population in rural communities are being left behind. 2021 Country Snapshots

The 2021 Country Snapshots compiles the key statistical data used by the Committee for Development Policy (CDP) at the 2021 triennial review of the least developed country category. LDCs are defined as low-income countries suffering from structural impediments to sustainable development. To identify LDCs, the CDP uses three criteria: gross national income (GNI) per capita; human assets index (HAI) and economic and environmental vulnerability index (EVI). HAI and EVI are indices composed of fsix and eight indicators, respectively. These fourteen indicators, together with the indices for per capita GNI, HAI and EVI, are presented in two-page profiles for each of the 46 countries classified…

Emerging inflationary pressures and policy dilemma Since the beginning of 2021, the world economy has been facing emerging upward inflationary pressures. For several countries, price dynamics became more worrying. By April, central banks in Belarus, Brazil, Georgia, Russian Federation, Turkey and Ukraine hiked policy interest rates, tightening policy stance to contain surging consumer prices.
