Following some signs of stabilization at the end of 2002, global economic growth is expected to improve in 2003, but the strength, breadth and sustainability of the recovery remain subject to many uncertainties. Risks associated with heightened geopolitical tensions, such as the possibility of higher oil prices and lower business and consumer confidence, are the key threats to global economic recovery in the short run. In such a global economic environment, policymakers are facing prodigious challenges. Macroeconomic policy worldwide has been generally accommodative over the past year and has helped prevent the world economy from falling farther into a synchronized global downturn. The… World Economic Situation and Prospects 2003

The attainment of international development goals requires addressing rural poverty. Rural development must reflect the multi-dimensional nature of poverty and must thus be multi-targeted. Policy measures include the expansion of education and health services, and the provision of incentives to rural populations to make use of such services. Also important is an increase in agricultural productivity and the removal of distortions and barriers to trade. Adequate provision of global public goods can contribute to effective poverty reduction by mitigating global risks and reducing public "bads". New institutional and financial arrangements need to be developed to… Local Development and Global Issues
Part I. State of the World Economy Part one of the World Economic and Social Survey 2003 discusses the state of the world economy in 2003 and the outlook for 2004. It includes a review of developments in international trade and finance and an overview of the situation in the world's economies as of mid-2003 and their prospects for 2004. Part II. Economic Policy and Poverty The goal of reducing poverty by half by the year 2015 has prompted policymakers to increase the attention given to policies and measures directly targeted at achieving this goal. At the same time, it is also necessary to examine policies and measures related to other goals that are expected to have a bearing on, but are… World Economic and Social Survey 2003

Sub-Saharan African countries continue to fall behind in terms of economic and social development. The persistence of conflict and post-conflict situations as well as the HIV/AIDS pandemic, calls for large additional transfers of resources. Aid needs to be better targeted towards countries with low incomes or special needs. It is only through the development of human and social capabilities that inequality and increased marginalization can be prevented. The creation of an African aid and development portal to provide a gateway to all development and aid projects in Africa, including those of non-governmental organizations, is proposed. Capacity-building in Africa: Effective aid and human capital
A pervasive slowdown in the world economy, aggravated by the terrorist attacks in the United States of America, has led to the lowest growth of gross world product in a decade. Gross world production grew little more than 1 per cent in 2001 and the volume of world trade stagnated. More than a dozen economies, accounting for more than two thirds of world output and including the world's three largest economies, were falling into recession. For the year as a whole, growth in the developed countries was the lowest in a decade. The economies in transition exhibited greater resilience but their average growth also declined. The key concern of economic policymakers at the beginning of 2002 is to… World Economic Situation and Prospects 2002
Part I. State of the World Economy In the second half of 2002, the world economy stands at a delicate juncture. After the weakest performance in a decade for the year as a whole, global economic recovery is under way. However, neither the strength, nor the breadth, nor the durability of the recovery is assured.Part one of World Economic and Social Survey 2002 investigates the causes of the pervasive slowdown in 2001, as well as the driving forces behind and threats to the recovery. Part II. Private-Public Interaction in Achieving Society's Goals Part two of World Economic and Social Survey 2002 examines selected aspects of the changing nature of the interaction between the public and… World Economic and Social Survey 2002
